I've often wished, when creating art, that there was a magic stock generator. I think this would be online; you'd enter a description of what you wanted into it, and upload what you had so far, and it would generate the perfect piece of stock that was in your minds eye, and even better it would be exclusively licensed to you and completely free for any conceivable use.
Unfortunately, such a generator doesn't exist. And even if a generator could be made, I bet it'd be expensive.
Stock is expensive. For example, I paid for my camera, for lenses, for my poser models, for my computer, for petrol to drive to the places I photograph. Then I put in time; the places I photograph aren't all right on my doorstep and they take time to get to, and it takes time to take photographs and then process and upload them. I get cold, so cold I can't hold the camera any more. And my long-suffering husband generously drives me up hills in the snow, or waits in the car when it suddenly occurs to me that I might be able to take cool bokeh textures of raindrops and streetlights looking out of the car.
I don't take model stock much (there's none on this account). But then you add in the dimension of costumes, makeup... all extra expenses, all extra time.
Stockists occasionally ask for donations for things, but a lot of stockists make stock that they don't use in their own artwork for other people for free.
You probably don't know me all that well. You may not know what my life is like, what I believe in, what I do for a living, what things I've had to overcome... I know I don't know these things about other stockers.
On this account, I have chosen to make my rules as liberal and as generous as I can. But that's my choice. I don't do model stock, so I personally don't mind if you use my stock art in macabre pieces. But if tomorrow I decide that I don't want you to be able to do that anymore, who are you to judge? I don't owe stock users anything. I don't have to share my stock, it's up to me what I do with my expense and hard work. As I said before, you may not know me. If my rules say "no macabre", for example, who is to say that a macabre scene may not be a PTSD trigger for some traumatic event I'd rather not think about? Why should that prevent me allowing people to do "pretty" things with my stock?
Creativity isn't free. In a dream world where none of us had to work and we could all do exactly as we pleased all of the time, maybe it would be. But sadly, this is reality.
